Pilates for Athletes

Many people recognize the benefits of Pilates for their general well-being, but did you know that Clinical Pilates can improve functional performance in athletes, and may even play a role in the prevention of injury?

A recent study conducted by A Laws, S Williams and C Wilson (2017) looked at a group of 40 recreational runners who participated in a 6 week course of Clinical Pilates. A modified functional movement screen was used to assess these runners. Results of this study showed a significant increase in functional scores following the course of Pilates. The findings of this study suggest that Clinical Pilates can significantly improve functional movement in recreational runners, and may play a role in the reduction of injuries related to running.

Pilates led by a qualified physiotherapist can offer specific and modified exercises that can assist in improving athletic performance and the prevention of injury.
